  Attic dialect form of the older ὀδμή (see. near the end), smell, odour, frequently of foul smells, δεινὴ δὲ θεείου γίγνεται ὀδμή Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 14.415 ; πικρὸν ἀποπνείουσαι ἁλὸς.. ὀδμήν, of seals, Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 4.406; ὀδμὰ.. κατὰ χῶρον κίδναται Pindarus Lyricus “Fragmenta.” 129.6; ὀσμὴ βροτείων αἱμάτων Aeschylus Tragicus “Eumenides” 253 ; ὀσμὴν ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ (i.e. τοῦ νεκροῦ).. πεφευγότες Sophocles Tragicus “Antigone” 412; κακὴ ὀσμή prev. author “Ph.” 891: pl., βυρσῶν ὀσμὰς δεινάς Aristophanes Comicus “Pax” 753; ὀσμαὶ οὐκ ἀνεκτοί Thucydides Historicus 7.87, etc. ; but also of fragrant odours, ὡς καλὴν ὀσμὴν ἔχει Euripides Tragicus “Cyclops” 153, compare Aristophanes Comicus “Ecclesiazusae” 1124; οἴνου ὀ. __II the sense of smell, ={ὄσφρησις}, Democritus Epigrammaticus 11, 5th c.AD(?): Hesychius Legal icographus —The older form ὀδμή (compare ὄδωδα, ὄζ-ω, od-or) is alone used by Homerus Epicus, Herodotus Historicus, and Pindarus Lyricus ; it occurs also in Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 115 (Lyric poetry), Democritus Epigrammaticus same place, and in later Prose, Theophrastus Philosophus “de Causis Plantarum” 6.14.1, al., Phylarchus Historicus 63 Josephus Historicus, Diocl.fragment 129, Anonymus Londinensis 34.38, etc. ; but ὀσμή is Attic dialect accusative to Phrynichus Atticista 71 ; also Ionic dialect, Hippon.in “PSI” 9.1089.11.
