1. stad

1) hoofdstad van de Romeinse provincie Cilicië en geboorteplaats van Paulus. Hand. 9:11; 21:39; 22:3. Zelfs in de bloeiperiode van de Griekse geschiedenis was het een belangrijke stad. In de Romeinse burgeroorlogen koos het de zijde van Caesar en kreeg bij een bezoek van hem aan de stad de naam Juliopolis. Augustus maakte het een vrije stad. De stad was bekend vanwege de hoge vlucht van het onderwijs. Strabo vergelijkt het in dit opzicht met Athene en Alexandrië. Tarsus was ook een belangrijke handelsplaats. Het lag op een vruchtbare vlakte aan de oevers van de Cydnus. Er zijn geen ru‹nes van enige betekenis over.
