Krant , Haaretz, May 07, 2005 Nisan 28, 5765, During the Middle Ages, the Jews of Safed believed the Messiah would come if and when the gate of the Meron synagogue fell. Archaeologist Yossi Stepansky of the Israel Antiquities Authority has pinpointed the beginning of this tradition in the Talmud, Tractate Sanhedrin, page 98a, where it is written that the Messiah will be found among the injured in the battle of the End of Days near the "gate of the city," near the cave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. That cave is in Meron. Later, it was also taught in the name of Rabbi Yossi Ben Kisma that "the falling of the gates" will bring about the coming of the Messiah.
