Attic dialect form of ἀπῐθέω (though even Trag. preferred ἀπιστέω, which see 11), to be disobedient, refuse compliance, Aeschylus Tragicus “Agamemnon” 1049 ; opposed to πείθομαι, Plato Philosophus “Phaedrus” 271b : frequently with dative, disobey, οὐκ ἀπειθήσας θεῷ Euripides Tragicus “Orestes” 31; ἀ. ἅμα νόμῳ καὶ τῷ θεῷ Plato Philosophus “Leges” 741d, etc. ; τὰ μεγάλα ἀ. τινί in great matters, prev. author “R.” 538b ; ἀ. ταῖς ἐνεχυρασίαις not to abide by them, prev. author “Lg.” 949d: later with gen., ψαφίσματος “GDI” 3705.111 (from Cos) ; ἐντολῶν LXX.Josh.5.6.
