Excerpt from Studies in the Sermon on the Mount
The following Studies form an inquiry into such religious and ethical questions as are raised by an attentive consideration of the words of the Sermon on the Mount. I have tried to deal only with those topics which are fairly suggested by the actual precepts recorded in the three chapters of St. Matthew's Gospel.
Lengthy though some of the sections are, the book is but a fragment. Scarcely anything is said about such controversial subjects as the relation between the Matthæan and Lukan reports, or on critical and textual questions, except where they seem to be bound up with the interpretation of the words. The Higher Criticism is valuable and deeply interesting as regards the methods of writing employed by the Evangelists, but it is not probable that it will seriously impugn the authenticity of the sublime words attributed to our Lord; not at least till many years have passed by. And meantime there are many thoughtful students who wish to get hold of the meaning of the words as they have been handed down.
