Franciscus Quaresmius, Elucidatio Terrae Sanctae II: 554 (1626 A.D.)
In the peregrination from Jerusalem to the Jordan River... what first appears worthy of our observation and veneration is a source, which is commonly called "the fountain of the Apostles" by the natives. This source is found in the descent, to the left of the road: its water flows throughout a channel into a marble basin, where both humans and animals comfortably quench their thirst.
